Raising chicks is fairly simple if you have the right supplies. Below are my top products we use every Spring.
1. Brooder - This term is used for the space your chicks will be contained in. We use an oval Rubbermaid trough. Keep in mind, boxes that have sharp 90-degree corners can trap chicks in the corner. Try to keep your container to oval shaped. Remember to get creative with a lid. You want something breathable but that won't let in predators. A good rule of thumb is 0.5 sq ft per chick when they first arrive.
2. Waterer/Feeder - These are easy to clean and easily accessible for the chicks.
3. Brooder Plate - If you're going to get 1 thing off this list, let it be this. Heat lamps are a huge fire hazard and not worth the risk.
4. Pine Shavings - We use these for brooding and for nesting boxes. Clean out your brooder often and ensure the bottom is covered so the chicks don't slip.
5. Roost - This fun little practice roost helps them learn and explore. Chicks need enrichment too!
6. Feed - We use Kalmbach Starter Medicated feed for the first 16 weeks of their lives (then switch to layer). Use the medicated feed if you did not vaccinate against Coccidiosis (different from Marek's vaccination).
7. Chick Grit - At 4 weeks once we start giving treats and scraps, we give free choice grit. This helps the chicks breakdown the food in their crop.
8. Sav-A-Chick Electrolytes - I use this in their water for the first few days and then again if I have any chicks looking weak.
9. Thermometer - Just to keep an eye on the temperature in the brooder and move the brooder plate accordingly.
